Egress Fee

An egress fee is the charge a cloud provider applies to data leaving its network — whether to the public internet, to another provider, or sometimes to another region. It is usually priced per gigabyte and is one of the most common sources of bill surprises, because it scales with success: the more customers download from you, the more you pay.

Egress pricing matters more than headline compute prices when comparing providers. Two platforms with identical instance rates can differ by a factor of three on data transfer. Reputable providers publish a single flat rate per gigabyte, include a monthly allowance per tier, or waive inter-region transfer inside their own backbone.

When estimating a cloud bill, model egress explicitly: count your average and peak outbound gigabytes, multiply by the published rate, and compare the total, not the compute line alone. Discounts on instances are easy to advertise; egress is where effective savings are usually won or lost.
