Bare Metal
Bare metal servers are physical, single-tenant machines provisioned in a cloud-style workflow — ordered by API, delivered in minutes, and billed hourly or monthly — with no hypervisor between your operating system and the hardware.
The absence of virtualization removes noisy-neighbor effects and virtualization overhead, which matters for databases, game servers, high-frequency trading systems, and any workload licensing CPU sockets directly. Modern offerings blur the old line by attaching cloud niceties — API provisioning, hourly billing, private networking — to physical hardware.
The trade-offs are elasticity and utilization: a metal server takes minutes to hours to provision (faster than racks of old, slower than a VM) and cannot be resized mid-life. Most mature estates mix the two — metal for the steady, performance-critical core and VMs for the variable rest.
